Not your typical comics

Comiket is a great outlet for independent artists to get exposure for their work. Typically, the world of popular manga and anime is dominated by big brands with huge advertising capabilities. And it is only the truly dedicated fans and cult followers who will get to experience the underside of comic culture in Japan. Comiket however has grown to a level of notoriety such that even small artists have the chance to get noticed or even picked up by larger firms.

One thing which fascinated me about Comiket was the amount of seemingly "non-manga" works. More creative and modern interpretations of comic concepts were very much present, and it was really inspiring to see artists engaged with interested attendees, and a chance for more surreal and unconventional works to get good recognition.
