An Eye-con of Shinjuku
Subaru Bldg.
Subaru is a fairly well known brand globally, particularly for those who are familiar with off-road racing. It's definitely not as much a household brand name as Toyota or Honda, or even companies known for their motorcycles like Kawasaki and Suzuki. But Subaru is indeed a hugely popular automobile company, especially people who like their cars to be rugged, strong, efficient, and fast.
In Shinjuku, the Subaru Building is in a prominent location, directly in front of the West Exit of the JR, Odakyu, and Keio Line stations and adjacent to the now familiar "corn" building, the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower. On the first floor, there is a showroom, showing off Subaru's newest cars.
Big Brother is Watching You
But the most distinctive thing about the Subaru Building is downstairs, in the basement. Adjacent to the big rotary outside of the main JR West exit, the Eye looks out at the crowds passing by on their way to the skyscraper district west of the station. This is the direction towards the Tokyo Metropolitan Government buildings, The major hotels, like Keio Plaza, Tokyo Hilton, and the Plaza Hyatt, as well as a number of major office towers, including the aforementioned Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower.
Most of the commuters seem to pass by the eye, oblivious to its beauty and spooky light. Beware, the Eye is Watching You.
