Enoden Train from Kamakura to Enoshima Island
A very much loved old train line with scenic views across the water
Enoden is short for Enoshima Electric Railway. It is an old line that runs between Kamakura and Fujisawa along the coast passing Enoshima Island. Locals and visitors just love it. The line even has a fan shop with everything in the Enoden train theme from cookies to socks.
Riding this small train line feels like stepping into a toy train set. Probably every Japanese child has played with a Plarail train and the company makes a special Enoden Enoshima set. So you can imagine how popular and iconic this little train must be.
And just like the scenery of the toy train, this line has all the sights: a tiny tunnel, a view of the ocean and Mt Fuji, temples and shrines along the way, a station from which you can walk across the bridge to Enoshima island, old shops and houses close the the rails, old-fashioned crossings, and wooden stations.
Enoden taking you along the coast
Kamakura is one of my favourite destinations for a day trip from Tokyo. It is an escape from the busy city a little like Kyoto on the ocean. Plarail's toy train special Enoden/Enoshima set shows exactly what you can expect to see here:
- Kamakura station: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine and many temples
- Hase station: Great Buddha, Hasedera temple, Kamakura's beach
- Enoshima station: the island with its shrines and lighthouse, onsen at Enoshima Island Spa, Iwaya caves
When the weather is clear, you can see Mt Fuji behind Enoshima Island.
