Visit Matsumoto Castle in the center on Nagano Prefecture. It`s one of the few original castles left thats is fully constructed from wood. Most of the castles in Major cities are replicas - concrete construction etc Osaka castle even has an elevator inside!
Matsumoto is 2 1/2 hours from Tokyo on express train but a great small town to visit. Well worth the trip.
