Unless you have a Japanese drivers license, to rent a car in Japan, you will need the International Driving Permit (1949), credit card and passport.

Many automobile manufactures in Japan also operate car rental services (e.g., Toyota Rentacar, Nissan Rentacar, Mazda Rentacar), and some offer service in English (especially in the airport counters).

Remember to ask if they have an English speaking hotline to call in case of an accident or emergency.
