Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

If you ever visit Okinawa, make it a point to spend a day at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (沖縄美ら海水族館), located in Motobu. The largest aquarium in the world until 2005, it houses over 26,000 animals with as many as 740 different species.

The aquarium consists of four floors, with tanks housing deep sea creatures, mantas and sharks, coral and tropical fish. Water for the saltwater exhibits is pumped into the aquarium from a nearby offshore source just offshore, 24 hours a day.

One of the biggest attractions is Churaumi's whale shark exhibit - you can even watch them being fed! Whether you're a kid, kid at heart, or full-grown adult, you'll be overwhelmed by this giant creature's size, grace and magnificence. Other exhibits include: giant turtles, dolphins, manta rays, and manatees.
